Home : High School

Some families are unsure of whether they'll homeschool their child throughout high school, so they're especially careful with selecting coursework for those teen years. Since each school principal has the discretion for what high school credits may be granted for homeschool classes, many parents don't want to risk having their child repeat work they've already successfully completed.

Maryland homeschool regulations do not specify how homeschool work can or should be evaluated in order to determine transfer credit. The regulations are vaguely written and only specify that the school may include administration of standardized tests and examinations and interviews with the child.

Families who use online courses as part of their homeschool curriculum may have an advantage in the process of re-entering the public school system. The Maryland State Department of Education maintains an approved list of virtual coursework that has been determined to be equivalent to what is taught in Maryland high schools. Transfer students who have taken any of these pre-approved virtual classes generally receive automatic credit for that course, if an appropriate grade was earned.

Ultimately, you'll want to select courses that match your child's learning style and needs, as well as your budget. However, if you're in the market for online courses and you think your child may be heading to public school at some point in time, it might be worth looking at some of the following courses.

Contact the department which administers Maryland Virtual Schools to confirm the most up-to-date course approval list. They can also answer your further questions.
